「8. 無私──忘我的精神──是值得追求的嗎？那麽凡人就必須直接面對無法逃避的自我為尋求認可和榮譽而不斷的喧嚷。如果沒有可供捨棄的自我生活，人就無法動態地選擇神性生活。如果沒有潛在的惡作為對比來提升和區分善，人將永遠無法緊握正義以得拯救。」
“8. Is unselfishness—the spirit of self-forgetfulness—desirable? Then must mortal man live face to face with the incessant clamoring of an inescapable self for recognition and honor. Man could not dynamically choose the divine life if there were no self-life to forsake. Man could never lay saving hold on righteousness if there were no potential evil to exalt and differentiate the good by contrast.”---3:5.13 (51.12)
